Brooks County was founded on December 11, 1858 and named in honor of Preston Smith Brooks.  The Brooks County Courthouse was constructed in 1864 and still houses the County Court Offices.  Brooks County, a community as proud of its past as it is of its bright future, boasts one of the largest historical districts on the National Register and has worked diligently to preserve its historic landmarks.  While Georgia has become the 4th fastest growing state in the US, Brooks County has managed to protect its rich history while bringing in new and growing industries.

Brooks County is conveniently located in Central South Georgia, less than 2 hours from the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.  Nestled just north of the Florida/Georgia line; the county seat, Quitman, is minutes from Interstate 75 and Interstate 10 with immediate access to Hwy 84.

Brooks County Schools have been recognized by the Department of Education as Distinguished Schools for exceeding the state's rate of gain on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). Brooks County Middle School and Brooks County High School have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in all academic areas. Our schools have produced lawyers, pharmacists, college professors, doctors- even a Nobel Peace Prize winner!

Brooks County is home to a 25-bed hospital that is affiliated with John D. Archbold Hospital in Thomasville, Georgia. Within a 30 minute drive, there are three large medical centers, and an additional hospital for a total of more than 800 beds and 450+ physicians. The Presbyterian Home and Retirement Community and Fellowship Home are two campuses that offer a wide range of options from cottage homes, assisted living, and skilled nursing.
